Wine, a faithful companion to our civilization for millennia, has always evolved with its time. Clay amphorae, oak barrels, glass bottles, BIBs… With each innovation, the container has transformed, not out of whim but by necessity and progress.
Today, at Domaine des Herbauges, we are writing a new chapter in this story with boldness close to our hearts: wine in a can.
But why this approach, you may ask ? For us, it is neither a fleeting trend nor a simple marketing ploy. Our goal is to address contemporary needs while respecting the heritage of wine. We chose this format to offer a practical, ecological, and responsible alternative tailored to new consumption habits, without ever compromising on our commitment to quality.
Did you know that the glass industry is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the wine world? Indeed, nearly 40% of a winery’s carbon footprint is attributed to the glass bottle. A standard lightweight glass wine bottle weighs around 500 grams when empty. Once filled with 750 milliliters of wine (approximately 750 grams), its total weight reaches 1,250 grams. In contrast, three full cans of wine weigh only 750 grams. The carbon footprint of a glass wine bottle is estimated at 350 grams of CO₂. Aluminum cans, however, have a carbon footprint approximately 72 times lower. Replacing one glass bottle with a can saves about 345 grams of CO₂ per unit.
Thanks to its widespread and accessible recycling processes, aluminum plays a crucial role in waste reduction. Worldwide, aluminum recycling infrastructures outperform those for glass, offering each can a swift and efficient second life.
At Domaine des Herbauges, we’ve invested in a cutting-edge pilot conditioning line, the “GAI 3621 FE CAN,” the first of its kind in France. This state-of-the-art technology allows us to package our wines directly on-site while preserving their purity and balance—a perfect blend of innovation and respect for the product and tradition.
Beyond the container, what truly matters is the content. At Domaine des Herbauges, every wine is carefully crafted, from vineyard to can. Our priority is to offer authentic enjoyment, wherever you are, while respecting the earth through more sustainable practices. Wine in a can is an invitation—a way to honor our heritage while looking toward the future. We firmly believe it’s possible to combine tradition and modernity, quality and convenience, pleasure and responsibility.
So, why not give it a try ? You might be surprised at how this small revolution can elevate your life’s moments.
